Although the 5 and 6 speed transmissions are different, the cables do adjust in a similar fusion. Look for the cable ends on the transmission and you should see the adjusters. I took some photos whilst I did it which I thought somebody might find useful.

When the cable is stretched, the grinding happens when you release the clutch, even if the shifter inside is pushed all the way forward for odd gears, or pulled backward for even gears and reverse. The gear selector shaft seal is what's causing the problem. It was leaking when I got the car so I bought a genuine Ford seal, as in the pic. This has a pressed steel houing that was a really poor fit in the machined socket in the gearbox. I tried using Loctite 638 but the gap is too big for this to cure. So, I put it in using bodyfiller (!). I put it in neutral and rolled to the toll booth and managed to force it in to 1st to take off but it was shuddering like mad as if the clutch was going or I was actually starting in 3rd. I stopped at the next service station and let it sit for a bit, gears seemed to select fine as the engine was off but the problem persisted again on starting.
